Three of many early concepts.

This week I am trying out a new style of calligraphy called "Fraktur". Fraktur is a German style of blackletter type and is much more condensed than italic calligraphy. For this broadside I will be writing out the lyrics to "Cold Fame" by Band of Skulls and using white watercolor on black card stock.
I am currently working on the design for a book of short stories and poems written by a number of students at Maine College of Art. I chose the title Naked Launch because the bulk of these submissions were pertaining to vulnerability or sexuality. Therefore, I decided to use an image of a naked woman covering herself; both exposed and somewhat modest.
After a few months of practicing each individual letter of the alphabet, pages at a time, I am finally creating my first broadside in calligraphy. The content is Act 5, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Using a C4 Speedball nib, I will construct a perfectly written document focused on composition, word and letter spacing, experimentation with swashes, and execution of the calligraphy itself. These are some examples of early drafts.
